Treatment for Varicose and Spider Veins

Treatment for Varicose and Spider Veins

Movement of blood through our veins is something we take for granted most of
the time. When veins become damaged or are weak, we become more aware of blood
flow (or lack of it) because varicose and spider veins form, usually in the
legs. Blood stalls or is sluggish in these veins and they become visible on the
surface of the skin.

One out of 10 people is affected by the conditions--80% are women. The
cause of varicose and spider veins is unclear. Heredity and pregnancy, however,
are contributing factors, as are obesity and lack of exercise.

How Do Varicose and Spider Veins Differ?

Both kinds of veins are the result of impeded blood flow. Other veins take
on the workload of the damaged veins to keep blood flowing. Varicose and spider
veins each have distinct characteristics.

Varicose Veins
.

Veins that become permanently distended and protrude are called varicose veins.
Usually, but not always, they appear bluish, swollen and stretched out on the
surface of the skin. The valves in these veins do not function properly, or the
walls of the vein are flaccid and blood pools in them.

Although varicose veins generally aren't serious, they can cause discomfort
including swelling, throbbing, heaviness and night cramps. They may pose a
greater health risk when blood clots, bleeding and ulcers occur and you should
contact your doctor.

Spider Veins.

When capillaries under the skin break they are called spider veins. They appear
on the skin as a purple, red or bluish web. The health risk of spider veins is
minimal, mostly confined to aching and itching. If they appear on ankles and
around the knees, they are often a symptom of varicose veins, which may or may
not appear on the leg surface.

Treatment Options

Doctors use several treatments depending on the veins.

  • Laser therapy eliminates spider veins with short, intense bursts of
laser light beamed onto the skin.

  • Sclerotherapy is a treatment for spider and varicose veins. A
solution injected into a vein acts as an irritant to the walls. The vein
becomes inflamed and sticky. Then the walls collapse together and heal
    closed.

  • Stripping is a same-day surgical procedure for more prominent
varicose veins. The affected veins are removed through small incisions and
their connections to the deeper veins are severed.

Follow-up Treatment

Varicose veins that have been treated must be monitored to ensure they don't
return. The younger a person is when he or she undergoes treatment, the greater
the possibility of other varicosities developing.

Self-care is important before and after treatment.

  • Wear
    compression stockings
    to apply pressure to
the lower leg to reverse the blood flow.

  • Swim, walk or climb stairs to engage the calf muscles to pump blood to the
    heart.

  • Elevate the legs periodically to help relieve aching.

  • Maintain a healthy weight.

  • Don't sit or stand for prolonged periods of time.

  • Eat a diet high in fiber to promote regularity.

  • Don't cross your legs at the knees when sitting.

Veins, veins, go away!

Veins, veins, go away!

We all know lots of women who have slim legs but refuse to wear skirts because of unsightly varicose or spider veins. Here are all the facts about those unattractive veins-and what you can do about them. And be sure to check back often-well be adding new information regularly.

The Venous System

Arteries and veins lead to and from the heart. The heart is the shipping and receiving department of your body. Vital oxygen and nutrients are distributed and waste products are removed .

The pumping action of the heart continuously drives oxygen-rich blood through the arteries and every organ in the body. A bed of tiny vessels called capillaries connects arteries to veins and allows oxygen to be exchanged for waste products and fluids. Your veins carry the oxygen-depleted blood back to the heart to pick up more oxygen. This is accomplished by two networks of veins in the legs known as the superficial and the deep venous systems.

Superficial and Perforating Veins

The superficial veins are closer to the skin and can be easily seen. They help regulate temperature by dilating or constricting to give off or conserve heat. The superficial veins feed blood to deeper veins via short veins called perforating or communicating veins.

Deep Veins

The deep veins, with help from muscles in the calf and foot, return blood to the heart. These, muscles, called the calf muscle pump or peripheral heart, are the engine on the venous end, compressing deep veins, squeezing blood up toward the heart. They play an important role in circulation since the heart does not generate enough pressure to do this job by itself.

Pressure in deep veins is higher than in superficial veins. To keep blood flowing from surface veins to the deep system, leg and arm veins contain of one-way valves. They open for uphill flow and close for downhill flow.

The Valves

The valve has two flaps that float open during muscle contraction and allow blood to flow toward your heart. During muscle relaxation they close, which prevents blood from flowing backward and pooling in the lower legs.

Incompetent valves allow blood to flow upward and backward. When valves become incompetent, blood is allowed to flow in both directions. This leads to sluggish blood flow which can cause swelling and the development of blood clots.

The Problem

Three parts of the venous system of the leg-deep veins, superficial veins, and perforating veins-must work together. Since they are all connected to one another, a problem in one leads to a problem in the others.

The weak link in the whole system is those one-way valves. They can either widen creating turbulent blood flow around the valves, or they can become thick, and eventually get worn away.

To make things worse, perforating veins (the ones that connect deep and superficial veins) contain lots of valves and are thin walled, making them more fragile and susceptible to changes in pressure.

Incompetent valves are nit able to control blood flows so the calf muscle pump becomes ineffective. Venous blood cannot be efficiently returned to the heart because the calf muscle pump is unable to do its job (routing blood back to the deep circulation). When something causes a slowdown or a blockage of venous blood to the heart, it is called venous insufficiency.

What Goes Wrong?

Your veins constantly fight gravity. The pressure from gravity is always present in the legs when we stand and is relieved when we lie down.

Two other important principles apply to fluids; (1) fluids (blood) always flow downward, like water down a mountain stream, and (2) from points of higher pressure to points of lower pressure. In other words, blood will take the path of least resistance.

Thus, failed venous one-way valves lead to chronic overstretching of veins. Like a balloon blown up to often, veins become stretched out of shape and a varicose vein is born. Varicose veins as well as spider veins are vessels that no longer function properly but do not benefit overall circulation.

Though heredity plays a role, your genes don't have to doom you to a life of long pants. Check out other leg health articles in the Expert Advice section on what you can do to ward off the blues.

Can you get varicose veins?

Can you get varicose veins?
An estimated 80 million adults in the U.S. alone suffer from leg vein disease. What are your chances of getting them?
Twisted, enlarged blood vessels most commonly found in the legs and feet, varicose veins are caused by blood pooling when valves malfunction and veins lose the elasticity needed to propel blood back to the heart.
It's not just woman thing
The majority of patients who seek treatment for leg vein problems are women. However, varicose veins do occur in men too.
Hormones also play a role here. Estrogen and progesterone is the culprit, researches believe, and most likely it is the balance of these two hormones that is important. Prolonged use of topical steroids also has been shown to cause spider veins.
Know your veins' triggers
Heredity can play a role. There is an inherited tendency for vein wall weakness or valve abnormalities.
Standing or sitting occupations are known contributors to vein disease. Also, people with type A blood or elderly folks have more of a risk.
Varicose veins is also twice as frequent in obese, overweight and tall people as in normal weight adults.
The mama blues
Pregnancy is a frequent but overlooked cause of varicose veins. Venous disease may develop as early as 6 weeks into pregnancy, long before the uterus is large enough to cause an increase in abdominal pressure. Thats sometimes even before the first missed menstrual period. Vein disease is sometimes the first sign of pregnancy.
Pregnancy also causes an increase in the actual amount of blood volume. Veins are therefore subject to higher pressure. Its like adding water to an already bulging water balloon.
In addition to hormonal changes in pregnancy, the use of oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy may promote vein expansion.
Pregnancy also increases the risk of vein inflammation associated with a build-up of blood products (thrombophlebitis) capable of causing a blockage. Not only can it destroy valves leading to varicose vein information, thrombophlebitis can also lead to pulmonary embolism, which occurs when blood carries the clot to the arteries in the lungs, causing a potentially life threatening obstruction.
Protect your legs
Trauma may also cause vein disease. Anything that causes damage-from a hit of a tennis ball to a surgical incision-may lead to formation of new blood vessels or cause existing ones to dilate and grow.
Many people will be happy to know that, contrary to popular belief, there is no scientific evidence that crossing your legs causes vein problems.

Pregnancy and leg Health

Most pregnancy-related ills disappear shortly after childbirth: Hemorrhoids shrink, heartburn subsides, and you no longer have to rush to the bathroom every 10 minutes. But unsightly varicose veins and spider veins can stick around longer than your kids do.
Venous disease may develop as early as 6 weeks into pregnancy, sometimes even before your first missed menstrual period. Vein disease is sometimes the first sign of pregnancy!
Varicose veins occur when blood pools in the vessels, making them visible through the skin or even causing them to bulge. Spider veins are networks of tiny capillaries that look like spiders' legs.
The symptoms of varicose veins vary in severity. There may be severe pain, mild aching, sensation of heaviness or none of these symptoms -in your legs. A faint outline of bluish veins may be visible, or serpentine veins may bulge from ankle to upper thigh and/or vulva.
Hereditary is the main cause for both, yet several changes during pregnancy may contribute: Blood volume increases, hormones cause vessel walls to relax, and the weight of the uterus slows blood flow in the lower half of the body.
Pregnancy also increases the risk of vein inflammation with formation of blood clots (thrombophlebitis). This can destroy valves (leading to varicose veins). These clots can also reach the lungs causing a life threatening obstruction (pulmonary embolism).
Normal, healthy leg veins, carry blood back to the heart. They are designed with series of valves that prevent back flow because they must work against gravity. When these valves are missing or faulty, blood tends to pool in the veins where the pressure of gravity is greatest, such as in your legs, resulting in the bulging of varicosities.
Pregnancy also can cause higher risks for untoward effects from long-distance airplane trips. During pregnancy, hormonal changes cause vein walls to relax and stretch. Blood flowing to and from the uterus puts added pressure on the veins. The baby's weight puts more stress on the mother's leg muscles and vein walls. Twenty percent of women who are pregnant develop varicose veins, and, if left untreated, 50% will suffer from varicosities for the rest of their lives. When the back flow of blood is beginning to occur in a pregnant woman's body, the smaller veins near the surface of the skin will become visibly knotted and look like spider webs (ie, spider veins). The first signs of potential clot formation include swollen, aching feet and legs with edema and increasing fluid retention. (24)

The Benefits of Compression Stockings

Ask your physician or nurse-midwife about wearing compression stockings.

Wearing graduated compression stockings has been clinically proven to effectively prevent varicose veins and blood clots. It even relieves many uncomfortable symptoms which occur in your legs during pregnancy. It may also avoid fatigue and heaviness.
Graduated compression stockings are tightest at the ankle gradually becoming looser as it goes up. This helps reduce swelling and augments the calf-muscle-pump, improving blood flow through the deep veins.
Regular support hose dont help the efficiency of the calf muscle pump. Non-graduated compression may actually cause more harm than good by creating a tourniquet effect.

Healthy Legs Can Boost Your Stamina

As any woman can attest, having your legs give out before you do can put a serious cramp in your day. A recent study found that more than 58 percent of the women surveyed, between the ages of 18 and 49, said that the one thing they would like to change about their legs was better stamina and energy. Surprisingly, this ranked higher than sexier looking legs (26 percent) and younger looking legs (Healthy Legs with Support hose14 percent).

Why are women so concerned with leg energy and stamina? One reason is that more than 50 percent of women surveyed experience leg fatigue. This issue is compounded for women who are constantly on the go juggling kids, work, family and self interests.

Leg vitality starts with healthy legs. When the system of muscles, veins, and valves in your leg and foot becomes weak it disrupts normal blood circulation. This means blood flow in your legs gives in to gravity and pools in veins and valves and will cause varicose or spider veins which is not only unattractive but also will make your legs feel heavy, tired and achy.

Simply improving your diet and avoiding certain lifestyle habits such as constricted clothing or hot baths and wearing graduated compression hosiery regularly does wonders to help legs stay healthy, vital and supple.

When circulation in your legs is kept healthy, you will not only look beautiful on the outside, you will glow on the inside as well. Remember, take good care of your legs and it will take great care of you.
